eLDSS: Engaging Students with Clickers

Engaging students in small and large classes by asking a question with “Clickers” (a.k.a. Students Response System (SRS) / Personal Response System (PRS) / Audience Response System (ARS)) has become an increasingly popular and effective pedagogical supplement to lecturing at the PolyU.

This 3-sessions series will look at how clickers can be used and applied to enhance teaching and learning. The workshops will involve hands-on activities as well as demos by guest speakers.

Using clickers is a powerful way to promote active learning for large and small classes. It allows both teachers and students to communicate their knowledge and understanding of content. This workshop will introduce four common Clickers tools being adopted on campus for learning and class engagement.

Come to this hands-on session to give them a try! BYOD - Please bring along your own mobile device (e.g. smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) to experience how these systems work.

Funded by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Teaching & Development Grant (TDG) and the UGC Additional Funding on Teaching & Learning, the Clickers@PolyU team would like to share its experience in promoting interactive blended learning with Students Response System (SRS) / Audience Response (SRS) System (a.k.a. “Clickers”) and collaborative learning strategies such as Peer Instruction.

This workshop will highlight: i) pedagogical innovations in designing and assessing class activities with Clickers, ii) key determinants for students and academics in adopting Clickers in their learning practices, iii) the effect of using Clickers and Peer Instruction in classes in terms of students’ engagement and learning outcomes.

In this workshop, our speakers will share their experience on integrating clickers with pedagogy in their own specific context. In addition to providing practical recommendations of in-class polling, they will suggest innovative ways of using the technology to further interactions among teachers and students, and students themselves. Whether you are looking for strategies to promote active learning with technology, or are simply interested in broadening your skills of using clickers, this workshop can help you.
