Rubrics are being accorded much importance as a tool for benchmarking academic standards as they allow grades to be interpreted in terms of the level of competence that they represent. Rubrics have a natural affinity with the criterion-referenced assessment approach because they make explicit the criteria and standards against which assessments are made. In this workshop, direct and indirect methods in the development of grading rubrics for use in major assessment tasks will be introduced.
