Data Processing and Classification Tree Building with R

Facilitator: Dennis Foung, ELC
Facilitator: Vincent Ng, COMP
Facilitator: Christine Armatas, EDC
Date:20 Jun 2018
Time:12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Venue:TU411

This workshop provides hands-on experience for colleagues to conduct simple learning analytics (Classification Tree) with R (a free software environment for statistical computing and graphic). It will start with some simple data processing techniques with MS Excel and skills for converting a spreadsheet to a dataset. Next, the workshop facilitators will help colleagues to construct Classification Trees in a step-by-step manner. The facilitators will help colleagues understand the output and how the trees can help predict at-risk students. The facilitators will assume that the participants do not have any statistical background. However, participants are expected to have some experience in writing formulas/functions with MS Excel.  Sample codes and datasets will be provided in the workshop.

*Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their laptop (NOT a tablet device; Installation of R is desirable but not a must). A limited number of laptops are available for use by participants at the workshop. Those participants who need access to a laptop should contact the workshop facilitators before the workshop to arrange.

This activity is jointly organised by the CoP on Conducting Learning Analytics to Inform Teaching and Learning and EDC.
