The arrival of broadband access and the invention of
new technologies for compressing and streaming video over the internet, along
with the increased affordability of sophisticated mobile devices, have combined
to make it easier than ever to use video for teaching and learning. This series
of workshops will look at how lectures can be made into effective videoclips,
and how video can be used in a variety of ways to enhance and add flexibility
to teaching and learning, including ‘flipping’ the classroom, building MOOCs,
and enable the move to successful blended and online delivery of content.

In this first session of the
Video@PolyU series, our focus is on how to video-capture your own lectures, and
why creating a bank of videoclips can benefit you, your teaching, and your
students.
Capturing lectures on video is a challenge and requires a
greater emphasis on planning and quality if the medium is to be used to its
best advantages. We will share our experience of what needs to be considered in
creating effective videoclips, how to go about video-capturing lectures, and
how videoclips can be used to flip the classroom into a more interactive
learning zone, and be one element of a successful MOOC.

Video
conferencing has great potential for learning in Higher Education. The
potential lies in creating greater opportunities for more interactive learning
amongst participants in multiple locations. Dialogue may be between teachers
(and/or remote guest speakers) and learners or amongst learners. However, the
success of video conferencing may well be dependent on factors other than the
technology.
In
this workshop participants will learn about different types of video
conferencing and experience Microsoft Lync and Blackboard Collaborate demos.
Amongst other things they will be able to participate in discussions, share
files, and send text messages to the speakers.

Video is a powerful teaching and
learning medium. It allows both the teacher and the student to communicate
their knowledge and understanding in a rich visual context.
This workshop will explore how teachers can make more
effective use of video to enhance students’ online learning. Focus will be on
using video features in Blackboard as well as the use of video repositories and
commercial videos for teaching such as iTunes University, Khan Academy, TED
Talks and YouTube. Participants will also have the chance to create different
types of video and then watch them directly on YouTube. Some mention will also
be made of different video formats for mobile devices such as the iPad, and
video guidelines for online courses such as MOOCs.
