Advanced Learning Theories, Technologies, Applications, and Impacts -- Illustrated by a simple example of an Adaptive Instructional System (AIS)
The talk unfolds within a robust research and development framework anchored in four core pillars: Theory, Technologies, Applications, and Impact. This structure underscores a symmetric relationship between human learners and dynamic digital resources, which stands as a foundational analogy guiding innovative research practices in adaptive pedagogy. The AutoTutor System, exemplifying the advancements in Adaptive Instructional Systems (AIS), emphasizes that with minimal training, one can achieve effective guidance in teaching. Key components like the AutoTutor Conversation Engine (ACE) and the AutoTutor Scripts Authoring Tool (ASAT) showcase the technological evolution of AIS up to Dec. 2022. After an examination of prior R&D in AIS, the presentation introduces a pivotal development: the role of Generative AI. This advanced AI has become a catalyst, enabling AIS to harness the full potential of modern AI techniques to further enhance teaching and learning experiences. Further insights, such as the "Teachable Agent" concept and the context-aware "Point & Query" FAQ feature, are also explored, painting a comprehensive picture of the trajectory of intelligent, adaptive pedagogical systems in an AI-driven era.
