Abstract:

This upcoming seminar will delve into an ongoing collaboration between Griffith University and Earthcheck with the specific intention of mentoring two local government regions in Australia to achieve destination level eco-tourism certification. The seminar will draw on this specific case study to illustrate how universities are uniquely positioned to mentor communities to embrace sustainability, with an emphasis on destinations that are traditionally unfamiliar with the concept. This collaboration has been cited as a critical component of the 'Towards 2032: Reshaping Queensland's Visitor Economy to Welcome the World', which identifies sustainability as a key catalyst for change in preparation for the Brisbane Olympic Games.

Professor Brent Moyle research impact and contributions to the field of tourism is demonstrated by his output of over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles generating more than 5,000 citations (GS), with a h-index of 40+ and an i10 index of 90+. Prof. Moyle research impact is exemplified by engagement on over 25 externally funded projects, a majority as lead Chief Investigator which focus on the potential of tourism to regenerate unique and charismatic nature, culture, and heritage in remote destinations, with an emphasis on generating ‘real world’ impact. He is currently the Higher Degree by Research (PhD) Convenor in the Department of Tourism, Sport, and Hotel Management and the HDR Director in the Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT) (#4 ranked globally – Shanghai Rankings, 2023), providing research leadership to cultivate a HDR community of practice. Prof. Moyle is currently a Visiting Professor in the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#1 ranked globally – Shanghai Rankings, 2023).
