The introduction to an academic text is essential because it sets the scene for the rest of the paper, but many novice writers find it rather challenging to write an effective introduction. This workshop introduces the three moves frequently seen in the introduction section of an academic paper. These three moves are based on the Creating a Research Space model, which was proposed by John Swales in 1990 and has been widely used by effective academic writers ever since.
(To benefit most from the workshop, you are strongly encouraged to bring along a representative research article regarded highly both in content and writing style in your discipline for discussion.)
This activity is jointly organised by the CoP on English for Professional Development and EDC.
